Scoring a Band 9 in IELTS is an impressive achievement, and while it’s challenging, it’s absolutely possible with the right strategy. Based on my experience as an IELTS examiner, here are the best tips broken down by each section:

Understand the scoring criteria: Especially for Writing and Speaking, learn what Band 9 looks like in terms of vocabulary, coherence, grammar, and task response.
Practice under exam conditions: Time yourself strictly during all practice tests.
Get feedback: Work with a tutor or someone familiar with the exam to evaluate your Speaking and Writing.
📘 Listening

Listen for detail and gist: Understand the overall meaning, but also catch specific words, dates, numbers.
Improve with a variety of accents: British, Australian, Canadian, and American.
Write answers while listening: Don’t wait until the end.
Check spelling and grammar: You lose marks for small mistakes.
📖 Reading

Skim and scan efficiently: Don’t read every word. Skim to understand, scan for answers.
Understand question types: E.g., True/False/Not Given, Matching Headings, etc.
Time management: Don’t spend too long on any one section.
Practice paraphrasing: IELTS often rewords the text in the questions.
� Writing

Task 1: Use clear structure (Intro → Overview → Key Details). Don’t include opinions.
Task 2: Write a balanced essay (Intro, 2-3 body paragraphs, conclusion). Clearly state your opinion if asked.
Use a range of vocabulary and grammar: Avoid repetition. Use complex sentences accurately.
Answer the question fully: Stay relevant and focused on the topic.
Proofread: Save 2–3 minutes to check for grammar and spelling.
🗣️ Speaking

Be fluent, not perfect: Speak smoothly. Pausing to find words is okay, but avoid long silences.
Use a wide range of vocabulary: Don’t just say “good” – use “fantastic,” “exceptional,” “beneficial,” etc.
Vary your grammar structures: Mix simple, compound, and complex sentences.
Be confident and expressive: Make it feel like a real conversation, not a test.
Expand your answers: Don’t give one-word or overly short answers.

Every student is different, so I adapt my teaching style to each of my students in order to cover together any gaps that may exist and never be left at the end of the lesson with unresolved questions. At the same time, I always invest in the teacher-student relationship as I believe that in order for the lesson to be effective, the student must feel comfortable with his teacher so that he can more comfortably say his questions or things that he did not understand without being ashamed.
